Focusing on medical patients, a very heterogeneous population present at the Emergency Department (ED), representing a wide range of patients either with a defined acute illness or with decompensating of multiple chronic disorders. Various laboratory biomarkers are routinely used in medical patients in the ED. However, many of these tools require a specific diagnosis, which may not be immediately obtainable, or have limitations in predicting the expected course of disease including the case fatality rate.
Inflammation - Diagnosis, Disease Progression and Prognosis – suPAR is a strong prognostic biomarker in patients with multiple medical diseases, for early identification of potentially critical cases – Triaging. Although the pathogenic background is not sufficiently well understood at present, suPAR, by mirroring multiple prognosis-related conditions, appears to be a promising biomarker for risk stratification. suPAR seems not only to be related to inflammatory processes, but also to reflect co-morbidities and organ dysfunction, which are important risk factors for case fatality in medical patients.
