Measuring & Understanding suPARnostic®
At suPARnostic® measurements above 4.0 and up to 6.0 ng/mL, a patient’s immune system can be considered ‘negatively activated’ (by non-specific challenge) indicating a potential infection or high level of inflammation. In this case, the patient should be referred for further testing, as his/her condition will likely worsen to a possible critical infection or condition. At this point diagnosis of SIRS/sepsis, TB or other serious infections would be warranted and recommended (especially in developing countries where infectious diseases are the first consideration for clinicians).
Finally, suPARnostic® measurements of 6.0 ng/mL to double digit levels can indicate a serious illness that is progressing rapidly to a critical situation. Patients with suPARnostic® levels above 15 ng/m might generally be too sick to present themselves to clinics by their own strength, with many of them dying shortly after suPARnostic® measurement.
A number of studies indicate that suPARnostic® testing can be used as a clinical decision making tool in a variety of indications, including Sepsis, HIV, TB, Malaria, Meningitis, etc.
